The more people link to your website, the more this helps with your search engine ratings and it is not just the number of incoming links to your site but the quality of those links. For example, a link from a newspaper or university website is more valuable than your next door neighbour's blog!
One way of encouraging links is to 'link swap' with suppliers, local businesses etc. You can ask them to place a link on their website to you. In exchange, you place a link to them.
